"smart.exe has stopped working" on Windows 8.1

I can start the application, but whenever I open a file (of any supported type) I get the message "smart.exe has stopped working". I can see a frame of the video in the preview window before it closes. I've tried the installed version and the portable version (1.8.6). Both do the same.

Please follow below steps, see whether this helps.
1.download the most updated portable version of Smart Cutter.
http://www.fame-ring.com/smart.cutter.rar
2.decompress it to a directory, say C:\FameRing, but not C:\Program Files this time.
in the directory, run the smart.exe

The event log shows this:

It works on a real PC, but not in a VM - I've tried virtualbox and kvm/qemu.
Any ideas?

What is the OS are your referring to? XP, Win7 or Win8.0/Win8.1?

Do you mean on you end, Smart Cutter in Win8.0/Win8.1 on real PC works, but Smart Cutter in Win8.0/Win8.1 on VM failed?

Hi there
Yes. Win 8 and Win 8.1 in VM (either kvm or virtualbox) fail with the error listed in my earlier post.
Win 8 and Win 8.1 work if on physical PC
I've just been able to try Win7 on a VM (kvm) and that behaves differently again. It runs, let's me browse for a file, but when I select ok, nothing happens. File doesn't open, but app doesn't crash either.
Any help will be very much appreciated. I only need to use this in a VM (which worked when I first bought it)
I'm happy to run any diags or generate any logs you require if it will help.
