Length metadata of AVCHD incorrect after trimming and export

This may not be a Smart Cutter bug, but filing this scenario so it's documented.

When setting the in and out points (ie trimming) an AVCHD .MTS video clip from a Canon HF100, then exporting that to the same .MTS format, the duration (ie video clip length) metadata displayed in Windows Explorer is incorrect.

Using a 3rd party tool like MediaInfo.exe, the metadata clip length is correct and matches the actual playing time.

Details:

Video file: AVCHD .MTS 1080i, 30 frames/sec, 16 megabit/sec from Canon HF100
Smart Mate 1.3.5
MediaInfo 64-bit 0.7.41

Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit
Motherboard: EVGA P55 FTW (A59 BIOS)
CPU: quad-core Intel i7-860 @ 3.8Ghz, hyperthreading on, RAM: 8GB DDR3
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D14
System disk: 300GB Velociraptor, 10k rpm SATA
Data disk: 2 x 1.5TB Barracuda, 7200 rpm SATA, RAID 0
Video: EVGA nVidia GeForce GTX-275 896MB, driver: 8.17.12.5896(258.96)
Network: AT&T U-Verse (12 megabit down, 1.5 megabit up).
Browser: Chrome 8.0.552.237, IE 8.0.7600.16385 (32 & 64-bit), FireFox 3.6.13.

I just noticed another thread exists on this: http://www.fame-ring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=143

Further testing shows it only happens if IN and OUT point are both set, then export the resultant clip. Doesn't happen if trimming only the beginning.

More testing shows it's inconsistent. Sometimes setting IN and OUT points doesn't cause the problem. Will report more specifics as I understand it...

I'm no longer convinced this is a Smart Cutter problem at all. I see a few cases where AVCHD files right from the camcorder display incorrect length in Windows Explorer. This is before they are processed by Smart Cutter or Smart Mate.

The same file shows correct length in the MediaInfo.exe utility, ver 0.7.41.

Camcorder: Canon HF100
Windows version: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Hi,

I was wondering if anything has been found out about this problem? This program looks great except I have this problem where the files produced have incorrect times, the 256kbps video data rate in the metadata, and the slider bar in windows media player does not move with the video and shows times way bigger than the clips length.

I am using avchd video from my JVC HM1 camcorder. Windows 7 64bit and do not have any codecs installed other than what comes in windows. The problem is 100% consistant for me with 1.3.7 trial of smart cutter.

I have not had this problem with files straight from the camcorder.

Thanks,
Lindsay

Dear Lindsay:
Thanks for your concern.

There was another customer from Italy who told us about the same problem. But this problem seems specific movie related.

So could you please send us a video sample for a test?

It would be better if the sample file size is less than 100 MB.

If you can not find small sample, use this simple tool to split your movie file into small pieces, and upload any one of them.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-S ... rger.shtml
-------------------------------------
before uploading sample, please create sub-directory with your name under the root, then upload sample to this sub-directory.

FULL priviliged --- mkdir, read, write, remove
Will be helpful to limit the sample file size under 100MB.
Thank you.

No probs, original and trimmed files uploaded to lindsay directory.

Following some more testing I have found some trimmed files are displaying details correctly however I haven't found a pattern to it.

Cheers,
Lindsay

Dear Lindsay:
Thanks for your sample files.

We have downloaded the samples and re-produce the problem as you said. We think this issue is related to meta data, and the developers are trying to find a reason. We will keep you posted about the progress.

Please feel free to send us your further advice and suggestion.
Thank you very much.

I am also having this issue. If i upload vids to youtube the time sometimes appear twice as long as they should and the video is going in slow motion. The other times the audio is out of sync.
If i play the files locally on my pc they are synced and fine all the time.
(I am using avchd on win7 64 bit, Smart Cutter 1.3.9 full).

Cheers

Has a solution been developed yet, then?
I'm finding the incorrect time property problem on both a WinXP system & a Win7 system using Smart Cutter 1.4. I disable the audio meter display as suggested but the problem remains.
If there is no solution yet, is there a utility for editing the time metadata that does not involve complete recoding of the file? I've searched the internet for such a utility but have not been able to find one that worls with ts & mpg video files.
