If you use a camcorder with HDD that writes directly to *.mpeg files (MPEG 2), then they may be DVD-compiant MPEG 2 AC3. Each time you press RECORD, a new file starts, so when you finish shooting, you get a bunch of files that need to be put together. After that, your goal will be:
1. appending clips in order to put them all together into one single program file
2. trimming each separate clip in order to do scene cuts where you want
3. previewing these cuts
4. saving the resulting video losslessly (no recompression)

If you have several HD MPEG 2 video files in transport stream (.ts) format, recorded with your satellite receiver, you will want to cut them, as in simply remove a few minutes from the beginning, the end and sometimes a few minutes in the middle of it (remove early start of recordings, late ends and, for some seldom files, the ads).

As a resulting file, just the same .ts format would be saved, as long as the video is NOT re-encoded / transcoded. If the files have additional audio streams and subtitles, these should be retained in the process.
